OpenClaw Launches Foundation, Becomes Official 501(c)(3) Non-Profit

OpenClaw announced the launch of the OpenClaw Foundation on July 8, 2026, formalizing what had been a weekend project into a 501(c)(3) American non-profit organization serving a global community.

Creator Peter Steinberger joined OpenAI earlier in 2026 — a move that underscored the need for structural independence. The foundation’s stated mission is to “bring people closer to AI — in service of human potential, not in place of it” and to act as a neutral steward keeping OpenClaw MIT-licensed, open, and independent.

The foundation has hired its first full-time team drawn from the global OpenClaw community:

  • Engineering: Vincent Koc (Chief Architect), Josh Avant, Patrick Erichsen, Dallin Romney, Jason Sy, Gideon Adegbesan
  • Operations: Jen Vescio (Partnerships), Matt Jasie (Finance), Hannes Rudolph (Community), Kelly Pike (Talent)

The ambition extends beyond the project itself. The foundation aims to make OpenClaw “the Switzerland of AI” — neutral ground where every model and lab can plug in and collaborate on agent standards. Work is already underway in foundation-convened councils on agent identity, agent profiles, evals, and enterprise deployment.

Open roles remain across engineering, product design, and developer relations.
