Personal CLI Command Memory: Never Re-Look Up a Command

If you’ve ever spent twenty minutes crafting the perfect find + xargs + sed one-liner, run it once, and then forgotten it by next month — you’re not alone. The command line is powerful, but commands are ephemeral. You either document them in a Notion page you’ll never open, or you re-learn them from Stack Overflow every time.

When you describe a goal — “I want to find all PNG files over 10MB modified in the last 30 days” — OpenClaw can construct the command, explain it, and store it for future reference. If you run it and it works, it goes into your command memory. If it fails, you correct it and the corrected version is what gets stored.

What You Need to Set It Up

  1. Shell history access — OpenClaw needs read access to your shell history file
  2. A memory file — A simple markdown file (~/.openclaw/command_log.md) where commands and context get stored
  3. A cron job — Daily or hourly sync of new history entries to the memory file
  4. Optional: a shell alias — Something like clai explain <command> to quickly ask OpenClaw about a command

That’s it. No agents, no special infrastructure. The memory grows naturally as you work.

Limitations

  • Context is key — A command without context is just a string. The more you describe what you’re doing (e.g., comments in your history log), the more useful the memory becomes.
  • Security-sensitive commands — Be thoughtful about what you log. Commands with passwords, tokens, or IPs should be sanitized before they go into your command memory.
  • Not a real-time shell — OpenClaw doesn’t intercept your shell mid-command. It’s a before/after layer, not an inline autocomplete (though you can simulate that with a well-crafted shell function).

The Payoff

The first time you ask OpenClaw “what command did I use to set up the VPN on DigitalOcean?” and it retrieves the exact steps with your modifications — you’ll wonder how you lived without it. Your terminal becomes a partner that remembers everything you’ve ever done in it.
