Setting It Up

1. Create a Finance Directory

2. Set Up a Cron Job

Create a daily or weekly cron job that runs an agent turn to:

  • Read new transactions from CSV
  • Categorize and summarize spending
  • Flag anomalies or subscription changes
  • Deliver a digest to Telegram

3. Automate Data Input

The weakest link in this workflow is getting transaction data in. Options:

  • Manual CSV export — download from your bank, drop in the folder
  • Email parsing — OpenClaw reads bank alert emails, extracts transaction info
  • API integration — if your bank offers an API, poll it on a schedule

What OpenClaw Can Do

Spending Categorization

Out of the box, OpenClaw can categorize transactions using simple rules:

Subscription Audit

This is the use case that surprises people most. Most adults have 5–15 subscriptions — and at least 2–3 are ones they forgot about. OpenClaw can:

  • List all recurring charges from your transaction history
  • Flag charges that increased without notice
  • Alert when a free trial converts to paid
  • Track subscription totals per month vs. prior months

Anomaly Detection

“Wait — there’s a $400 charge from a vendor I’ve never used.” OpenClaw can flag transactions that don’t fit your normal spending patterns. Not fraud detection (use your bank’s actual fraud alerts for that), but pattern recognition:

  • Spending at unusual hours or locations
  • Amounts significantly above category norms
  • First-time vendors with large charges

Subscription Price Increase Detection

A specific anomaly type that’s worth calling out separately: price increases on existing subscriptions. Most companies announce these via email a month before they take effect, but nobody reads those emails. OpenClaw can cross-reference your subscription list against new transactions and flag when a known service silently raised their price:

This works because OpenClaw already knows your subscription list from the subscription audit. When a known recurring charge changes by more than 5%, it flags it — before you’ve paid three months at the wrong price.

Every Friday at 6pm, OpenClaw delivers a Telegram digest:

  • Total spent this week vs. last week and vs. budget
  • Top spending categories ranked
  • New subscriptions detected
  • Anomalies worth reviewing
  • Upcoming bills from past history (if you’ve told it about them)

What You Need to Set This Up

The setup is deliberately lightweight — no bank API keys, no third-party integrations, no credit card connect flows.

  • OpenClaw running on a server or always-on machine (handles the cron scheduling and Telegram delivery)
  • A finance directory in your workspace (~/finance/) with three files:
    • transactions.csv — your bank export, updated weekly
    • categories.json — your spending rules (what counts as Groceries vs Dining)
    • budget.json — monthly targets per category
  • IMAP access (optional) — if your bank sends alert emails, OpenClaw can parse transactions directly from your inbox instead of requiring manual CSV exports
  • Telegram — for digest delivery and real-time alerts

The CSV export is the main friction point. Most major banks (Chase, BofA, Wells Fargo, TD Canada Trust, RBC) let you export 90 days of transactions in one click from their web interface. Set a weekly calendar reminder to do it, drop the file in your finance directory, and the cron job handles the rest.

Handling Multiple Accounts

Most people have at least two accounts that matter: a checking account and a credit card. The system handles both — and the digest can show them separately or rolled up together.

OpenClaw detects income deposits and excludes them from spending analysis — you see your actual cash flow, not just a list of charges.

Limitations

Data freshness — this approach depends on CSV imports or API polling. The insights are only as good as the data. If you import weekly, you won’t catch issues until the weekly digest.

No write-back — OpenClaw reads and analyzes, but doesn’t pay bills or move money. That’s intentional — external financial actions warrant a human in the loop.

Categorization accuracy — LLMs handle novel transactions better than rigid rule engines, but occasionally miscategorize. The categories.json override file helps.

Multi-account complexity — tracking 3+ accounts across multiple banks adds bookkeeping overhead. Start with one account.

Why This Works

The personal finance problem isn’t a knowledge problem — most people know roughly what they should be doing. It’s an attention problem. You don’t need a better budget spreadsheet; you need something that reads the data you already have and puts a summary in front of you on a schedule you don’t have to remember.
