The alertAt field is a fraction — 0.80 means “ping me when I hit 80% of this category’s limit.” OpenClaw fires a Telegram alert mid-month instead of waiting for the weekly digest to say you’re already over.

The alert fires automatically when the daily cron reads your transactions and crosses the 80% threshold. You can adjust alertAt per category — Dining at 0.90 (more discretionary) vs. Rent at 1.00 (never alert, just track).
Subscription Audit
This is the use case that surprises people most. Most adults have 5–15 subscriptions — and at least 2–3 are ones they forgot about. OpenClaw can:
- List all recurring charges from your transaction history
- Flag charges that increased without notice
- Alert when a free trial converts to paid
- Track subscription totals per month vs. prior months
Anomaly Detection
“Wait — there’s a $400 charge from a vendor I’ve never used.” OpenClaw can flag transactions that don’t fit your normal spending patterns. Not fraud detection (use your bank’s actual fraud alerts for that), but pattern recognition:

Subscription Price Increase Detection
A specific anomaly type that’s worth calling out separately: price increases on existing subscriptions. Most companies announce these via email a month before they take effect, but nobody reads those emails. OpenClaw can cross-reference your subscription list against new transactions and flag when a known service silently raised their price:

The CSV export is the main friction point. Most major banks (Chase, BofA, Wells Fargo, TD Canada Trust, RBC) let you export 90 days of transactions in one click from their web interface. Set a weekly calendar reminder to do it, drop the file in your finance directory, and the cron job handles the rest.
Handling Multiple Accounts
Most people have at least two accounts that matter: a checking account and a credit card. The system handles both — and the digest can show them separately or rolled up together.

Investment Portfolio Tracking
Your portfolio doesn’t sit still — dividends reinvest, prices fluctuate, and contribution schedules run on autopilot whether you’re watching or not. Financial Pulse can extend beyond your bank accounts to track investment accounts too.
What it monitors:
- Balance changes — large swings in brokerage or retirement account values get flagged, even if they’re just market moves
- Dividend/interest income — detected as small recurring credits from known brokerage sender addresses, rolled into monthly income totals
- Unusual trading activity — a options assignment, large withdrawal from a taxable account, or unexpected transfer between accounts
- Fee changes — if your Vanguard account suddenly shows a higher management fee line item, it gets flagged the same way a subscription price increase would be

This keeps market noise in proportion — a 5% drop when you also withdrew $2,000 for a car is very different from a 5% drop on a flat balance.
Cross-Account Transfer Reconciliation
The hardest part of multi-account tracking isn’t the individual accounts — it’s the transfers between them. When $500 moves from Checking to Savings on the 3rd, your checking CSV shows ”-$500 Transfer to Savings” and your savings CSV shows ”+$500 Transfer from Checking.” If OpenClaw processes both separately without context, it looks like a withdrawal from Checking and a deposit to Savings — correct in isolation, but wrong in net worth terms.
OpenClaw handles this by matching transfer transactions across accounts. It looks for pairs: same amount, opposite signs, dates within 1 business day, and descriptions that indicate an internal transfer (“Transfer to Savings”, “XFER TO CHK”, “Pay Yourself First”). When it finds a matched pair, it nets them to zero in the consolidated view instead of counting them twice.

The distinction matters: a Zelle to a friend is a real expense; a transfer to your savings account at a different bank is not. OpenClaw flags unmatched transfers as “real outflows” because they likely are — but checks matched pairs and nets them out.
The cross-institution gap: If your savings account is at a different institution (e.g., Ally, Marcus, EQ Bank), your checking CSV won’t show the corresponding credit — it’s simply not there. OpenClaw handles this by flagging the outflow in checking as a “pending reconciliation” item and noting it separately in the net worth calculation:

Once you confirm the savings account credit, OpenClaw marks it reconciled and updates the net worth accordingly. Until then, it stays as a pending item — honest about what it knows and doesn’t know.

OpenClaw tracks contributions by looking for transfers to savings accounts in your transaction history — it reads the CSV, finds the “Transfer to Savings” entries, and rolls them up against your goals. If your savings account is at a different institution, add those transfers manually or set up a dedicated IMAP rule to catch them.
The “On track” indicator compares your current monthly contribution rate against what’s needed to hit the target date. When you’re short, it tells you how much more per month closes the gap — actionable, not just informative.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
CSV format changes after a bank UI update
Banks occasionally change their CSV export format — new columns, different date formats, altered header names. When OpenClaw starts producing strange output or blank digests after a bank update, check the CSV header directly. Common culprits: Transaction Date becoming Date, amount columns splitting into Debit and Credit instead of a signed Amount, or the Description field getting truncated. Update your categories.json pattern matching if the vendor name extraction breaks, or add a date format override in the cron prompt if MM/DD/YYYY becomes YYYY-MM-DD.
Transactions appearing duplicated after re-export
If you export the same date range twice (common when doing manual weekly exports and then a retroactive full-quarter export), you’ll have duplicate rows. OpenClaw handles deduplication by matching on date + vendor + amount — if those three fields match within a 3-day window, it’s flagged as a duplicate. You can suppress the duplicate warning in the cron prompt once you’ve verified the import is clean.
IMAP parsing missing transactions
Email-based parsing depends on the bank’s alert email format staying consistent. If transactions are missing, check: (1) the email sender address in your IMAP filter hasn’t changed, (2) the email body format still matches the parsing pattern OpenClaw uses, (3) the transaction alert emails aren’t being routed to spam or a subfolder. Run a manual test by asking OpenClaw to read the last 5 alert emails from your inbox and report what it extracted.
Budget alerts firing too early or too late
The alertAt fraction is relative to the calendar month, not your personal billing cycle. If your salary comes on the 15th and you want alerts timed to your cash flow, you’ll need to either set the billingCycleStart override in budget.json or just adjust alertAt empirically — start at 0.75 and move it up/down based on whether the alerts feel premature or late. OpenClaw logs every alert with the trigger condition, so you can review the pattern after 2–3 months and tune it precisely.
Savings goal showing “on track” but account balance is flat
OpenClaw detects savings contributions by looking for transfers out of your checking into a savings account in the transaction CSV. If your savings account is at a different institution and transfers don’t appear in your primary account’s export, OpenClaw will show $0 contribution for the month even though the money moved. Fix this by either: (1) adding the savings account’s CSV export to your finance directory and merging it in the cron prompt, or (2) tagging savings transfers with a recognizable description in your bank’s transfer tool so they appear in your checking export with a consistent label.
Missing historical context for anomaly detection
Anomaly detection is genuinely weak in the first 4–6 weeks because OpenClaw has no baseline to compare against. During this period it errs on the side of flagging everything. Don’t be alarmed by a high flag rate early on — once you have 8+ weeks of data, the baseline becomes meaningful. If you want a head start, you can backfill historical CSV exports (most banks allow 90-day exports) to give OpenClaw a fuller picture on day one.
Getting Started: First 30 Days
Here’s how this plays out in practice when you’re starting from zero:
Day 1–2: Foundation
Create the ~/finance/ directory with transactions.csv, categories.json, and budget.json. Do one manual CSV export from your primary bank account and drop it in. Write your first categories.json with broad patterns — you can narrow them in week two once you see what your actual transaction descriptions look like.
Day 3: First digest
Set up the daily cron to run at a time you actually check your phone (7pm is common). Review the first digest. The categorization will be imperfect — that’s normal. Note the edge cases (that weird POS receipt label, the third-party payment processor) and add override rules to categories.json.
Day 7: First subscription audit Trigger a manual subscription audit. Review what OpenClaw finds against what you think you pay for. The gap between those two lists is the value of this system. Cancel or flag anything orphaned.
Day 14: IMAP tuning (if using email parsing) If you’re parsing bank alert emails, review two weeks of parsed transactions and verify accuracy. Adjust the IMAP filter sender list, add new sender patterns for any missed transactions, and refine the email body parsing pattern if amounts or dates are being extracted incorrectly.
Day 21: Budget calibration
By now you’ve seen three weekly digests. Check whether the mid-month budget alerts fired at times that were useful or annoying. Adjust alertAt per category. If Dining alerts fired too early, move it from 0.80 to 0.90. If you missed a Utilities alert entirely, move it from 0.95 to 0.85.
Day 30: Second account + Net Worth baseline Add your second account (credit card is usually the highest-value add). Set up the net worth snapshot. This is your baseline — screenshot it or save the Telegram message. In three months, the trend line becomes the insight.
Limitations
Data freshness — this approach depends on CSV imports or API polling. The insights are only as good as the data. If you import weekly, you won’t catch issues until the weekly digest fires. A subscription that charges on the 1st and gets exported on the 7th is already seven days old by the time you see it. For catching unwanted charges quickly, IMAP email parsing (same-day) is better than weekly CSV exports.
No write-back — OpenClaw reads and analyzes, but doesn’t pay bills or move money. That’s intentional — external financial actions warrant a human in the loop. You can set up OpenClaw to draft a bill payment email for your review, but it won’t send it without confirmation.
Categorization accuracy — LLMs handle novel transactions better than rigid rule engines, but occasionally miscategorize. A restaurant charge that looks like a retail purchase because of how the POS terminal submitted it will end up in the wrong bucket. The categories.json override file helps, and reviewing the weekly digest for miscategorized items and adding explicit rules compounds accuracy over time.
Anomaly detection has a cold-start problem — it’s genuinely weak in the first 4–6 weeks because there’s no baseline to compare against. During this window it flags anything unusual, which means a high false-positive rate. Don’t trust the anomaly alerts deeply until you have at least 6 weeks of history. Backfilling historical exports (if your bank supports it) shortens this window significantly.
Multi-account complexity is non-linear — tracking two accounts is roughly twice the work of one. Tracking four accounts across three institutions is closer to six times the work because you now have to manage reconciling transfers between accounts, avoid double-counting movements, and keep separate CSV imports in sync. Start with one account, get it clean, then expand.
Savings goal tracking requires explicit transfer detection — if your savings account is at a different institution and transfers don’t appear in your primary account’s export, OpenClaw can’t see the money moving and will report $0 contributions. This is a data gap, not a logic failure. Fix it at the source by either consolidating at one institution or adding the savings account export to the finance directory.

You don’t need a better budget spreadsheet; you need something that reads the data you already have and puts a summary in front of you on a schedule you don’t have to remember.
